The framerate is now limited so that it doesn't run too fast on newer video cards. There is also a new option to disable xscreensaver support, so that it can be used with other screensaver managers (or just from a shell).
The 2.x series is a continuation of the original 1.0 screensaver written in 2003. This version adds several changes, including widescreen support, and a migration from GLUT to X11/GLX for Unix. This means that it will work with xscreensaver and is not just limited to KDE.
